Equality Wines Introduces The World’s First Cause Wine Portfolio
The first two releases — Love Wins Cuvee and Decision Pinot Noir — honoring Jim Obergefell and his husband the late John Arthur named plaintiffs in the landmark marriage equality case
New York and San Francisco – June 22, 2016 – Equality Wines, the world’s first cause wine portfolio dedicated to equality for all people, has officially launched and released The Love Wins Cuvee. The Decision Pinot Noir will be available in about a month. The wines honor Jim Obergefell and the late John Arthur, whose landmark Supreme Court case ruled in favor of marriage equality across the country. Both wines come from famed producers in the Russian River Valley and include Iron Horse Vineyards (Cuvee) and Giusti Ranch (Pinot Noir). The Cuvee and Pinot Noir (available in about one month) can be purchased by visiting www.equalitywines.com and tasting notes are available below.
“We chose producers and grapes from the Russian River Valley not only for the amazing grapes that are grown in the area, but also because Western Sonoma County is known for its inclusiveness and acceptance of all people,” said Elissa Nauful, co-founder of Equality Wines. “Jim Obergefell and John Arthur were the ideal people to honor with our first release. The Supreme Court case had such a positive impact on the LGBT community and the world at large that both Elissa and I knew we wanted to pay tribute to Jim, his late husband John and all the other plaintiffs that fought to make marriage equality the law of the land,” continued Matt Grove, co-founder of Equality Wines.
“I am honored and also humbled to be a part of this historic release of wines and the historic decision that redefined marriage for all people,” said Jim Obergefell. “Beyond the contribution that John Arthur and I made, there are numerous other plaintiffs as well as attorneys and advocates that the we all should raise a glass to in honor of their commitment on the anniversary of this landmark decision.”
This unique portfolio of wines is a perfect pairing for Elissa and Matt, a coupling of their shared passions for excellent wine and equal rights. The portfolio is inspired by Dr. Marilyn Shultz, the aunt of Mr. Grove, who in 1971 led the class action discrimination suit against NBC and its affiliates that ultimately re-shaped the company.
The wine accompanies the publication launch of “Love Wins,” by Debbie Cenziper and Jim Obergefell, the inspiring true story of the lovers and lawyers behind the landmark civil rights victory. Proceeds from the sale of the wine are being donated to the Human Rights Campaign, America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are embraced as full members of society at home, at work, and in every community.
Equality Wines selects its winemakers through a handpicked and vetted process, vintners who hail from well-regarded regions like the Russian River Valley and Sonoma County. The result is gems like The Decision Pinot Noir, made from award-winning Pinot Noir grapes, and Love Wins Cuvee, a sparkling rose worthy of a wedding toast or a memorable meal.
Love Wins Cuvee: This is a wine worthy of its name. Comprised of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, Love Wins Cuvee is the first wine to celebrate gay marriage. It is dedicated to Jim Obergefell and John Arthur, the first recipients of the Dr. Marilyn Shultz Tribute Wine honor.
The Decision: Aged 16 months in French Oak, this is a full-bodied wine with a purity of concentrated fruit. It’s layered, with a textured personality, and presents an exotic and enticing bouquet of cinnamon, raspberry and blackberry along with baked cherry pie.
About LOVE WINS, the book that inspired the wine
On June 26, 2015, in a decision that drew headlines around the world, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed the constitutional right of gay couples to marry in all 50 states after decades of incremental rulings. The historic case, Obergefell v Hodges, began with a simple wish: John Arthur, paralyzed by ALS, wanted to die a married man. In LOVE WINS: The Lovers and Lawyers Who Fought the Landmark Case for Marriage Equality, to be published by William Morrow Books on June 14th, Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter Debbie Cenziper and co-author Jim Obergefell, the named plaintiff and now among the most recognized faces in the LGBTQ rights movement, present an intimate, gripping account of the legal precedents and personal hardships behind this unforgettable victory for the gay community. Taking readers inside courtrooms, lives, and hearts, LOVE WINS captures the determination and courage of couples, families, supporters, activists, and attorneys who joined forced to validate the bonds between same-sex partners from coast to coast.
